The new year is off and running and the Elk Grove Lions Club is happy to be supporting activities for the district as well as for the people in our community. During the past month, we had the pleasure of hosting the lunch for the District Cabinet meeting on August 18th. Lion Warren Weaver did us proud with the great lunch he and his crew provided. Our members not only provided lunch, but we also provided training sessions for the District. Lion Jim Switzgable provided the Club Secretary Training and Lion Fred Handley provided the Club Treasurer Training.
Locally, our club hosted the Scout Troop 59 Court of Honor, enjoyed our Past President’s Dinner and cooked a great dinner for the Shortline Lake Water Ski Banquet. As usual, we also hosted the monthly pancake breakfast fund raiser for the Elk Grove Senior Center.
We have several activities schedule for this month, including our support of the Elk Grove Community Scholarship Foundation for their major annual fundraiser, Spotlight Elk Grove.
We also managed visitations to the Pride of Laguna, and to the District Meeting in Galt. I hope we can additional visitations every month. I have received requests for more help from our club that should keep us busy as one of the most prolific clubs in 4C-5. I also hope to see us add more new faces to the Elk Grove Lions Club so keep your eyes and ears open for potential new candidates out there. Looking forward to a great September.

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.
We hope you will consider joining our club.

I have been in office only a month, and so much has already happened, that I am excited about all we will accomplish in the coming year.
As usual, the Elk Grove Lions supported the Food Truck Event in downtown Elk Grove on the first Wednesday of the month. It was a hot day, but they were there to set up chairs and tables and staff a water and soft drink table. It was a great turnout and a great opportunity to serve our community.
The following week the Lions cooked for the monthly breakfast at the senior center. We had a great crew of Lions and a great turnout at the senior center.
At our first meeting, we had the pleasure of having Stephanie Allen from the Sacramento Public Library present a program about “Literacy in Adults”
Our second meeting of the month was the first club visit for the new District Governor Andy Anderson and part of his cabinet. While visiting our club, Governor Andy installed two new members, John and Rebecca Muegge.
We also had the pleasure of presenting checks from the proceeds of the Carnitas Festival to the Soroptimist International of Elk Grove and the Healthy Start program.
The first big event of the month was hosting the installation dinner for the new District Governor, Lion Andy Anderson. Not only were we given the opportunity to show off our cooking skills, thanks to Lion Warren Weaver and his crew, but our own Past District Governor, Lion Gary Dapelo, was the master of ceremonies. The turnout was great and a good time was had by all.
The Lions also assisted the Strauss Festival by collecting parking fees at their annual 4 day event which will provide much needed funds to continue this long standing Elk Grove tradition.
The final big event of the month was the Kohl’s Child Spree, a joint effort by many local businesses and service clubs. The Elk Grove Lions were joined by Lions from several area clubs, including The Pride of Laguna Lions, Maharlika Lions and Fort Sutter Lions. As usual, we cooked pancakes and sausages with The Pride of Laguna assisting with the serving. Members of the other Lions Clubs served as chaperones for the kids during their shopping spree at Kohls. Great teamwork. The other service clubs supporting this great event included the Soroptimist International of Elk Grove, the Elk Grove Rotary and the Elk Grove Optimists.
If that was not enough, the Lions managed the parking for the Strauss Festival and supported the Fort Sutter Lions with a softball tournament on the same day that we worked the Kohl’s Child Spree.
That’s the way to start the new year. The month of August offers a little respite at this time with far fewer events scheduled at this time but as Lions we are always ready ‘”to serve”! So we are looking forward to ‘cruising along’ this next month.

As my year as your President draws to a close I want to thank all of the members of the Elk Grove Lions Club for your support. Thanks again for all you do for our club and for our community. I know that with your continued support, our new President, John Zehnder, Jr., will lead our club to greatness in the coming year.
Thanks, Randy
From Incoming Lion President John Zehnder, Jr.
As my year begins, with fond wishes from the previous President, I think my message is simple, “Cruise Control”! I hope to continue the activities that got our club to ‘Number 1!’ for the district. The goals I am setting for myself and the club this year is to continue doing what we’re doing! Get some new members, improve on the activities we already do and maybe add a few more and continue to work with others in our community to keep the Elk Grove Lions club moving the greater community of Elk Grove forward. So, when thinking of ‘cruise control’, this club will continue to be one of the best in District 4C-5 and for us ‘cruise control’ is “full speed ahead”!!

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of projects including disaster relief — across many borders. We serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.
We hope you will consider joining our club.
To become a Lion, you must be of good moral character and good reputation in our community.
Membership is by invitation.
If you’re interested in being invited to join Lions Club of Elk Grove, you may want to consider some of the following facts about Lionism:
Lions are active.
Our motto is “We Serve.”

Announcements
——————————————————————– Lion of the Year, Jack Edwards
As the Elk Grove Lions Club celebrated another year of service to the community of Elk Grove at their annual new officer installation dinner, they announced the selection of Lion Jack A Edwards as the Lion of the Year.
Jack, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker here in Elk Grove, has been a Lion since March of 2004. As a resident in the Elk Grove area for close to 30 years, Jack has a long history of service to the community. He worked with the Elk Grove Youth Soccer League as a club registrar, coach and as their webmaster. In fact, as a volunteer webmaster, Jack created and continues to maintain the Elk Grove Youth Soccer League website along with websites for the Elk Grove Lions Club, the Pride of Laguna Lions Club, and the Elk Grove Soroptimist Club. He also created and maintains a community website, www.LivingInElkGrove.com.
In his continuing efforts to support the Elk Grove Lions Club, he has taken on the responsibility as the editor of their monthly newsletter.
As usual, we want to send out a special thank you to Dr. John J. Eliopulos, O.D. for all of his support with our efforts to continue to provide support to people with visual impairments. You can find Dr. Eliopulos’ office at 9074 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95624
