Thanks to all of the members of our club, we had a great February as we served the Elk Grove Community. We did not have a pancake breakfast in February due to the move of the Senior Center to their new facility. We are looking forward to getting back on track in March.
During the past month, many of our members have been working to obtain Food Managers Certification as well as Food Handler Certification. All of this was handled by the Senior Center in the past, but since we are the primary users of the kitchen in the future, we need to obtain our own training and certification.
We had a great turnout for our annual Student Speaker Contest, thanks to Lion John Zehnder, Jr., and Lion Jack Edwards. Also a special thanks to Lion Don and crew who hosted the pizza dinner. Congratulations to our winner, Margarita Jamero. She is scheduled to move forward to the Zone contest on March 13th at 7:00 pm at the Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library at 7335 Gloria Drive, Sacramento. Please plan on attending to give her your support.
I mentioned last month that our past president for 2005-2006, Dave Ogden, was in hospice. Dave passed away last month. Those of you who knew Diann should take the time to reach out to her during this difficult time for her.

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of projects including disaster relief — across many borders. We serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.
We hope you will consider joining our club.
To become a Lion, you must be of good moral character and good reputation in our community.

We will not be working parking for the Early California Days because the CSD did not give the Historical Society permission to charge admission for their event.

Thanks to all of the members of our club, we had a great January as we served the Elk Grove Community. We started off the month with our service to the Senior Center of Elk Grove with our last monthly Pancake Breakfast, on the second Saturday in January, since they will be moving to their new site at District 56, the new Civic Center.
Unfortunately, the process of moving and clearing out the Senior Center will also leave us without a meeting place for February as we wait for the Community Services District to take over what is being now called the Beeman Community Center. As we begin to work with CSD starting in March, many of our members will have to obtain Food Managers Certification as well as Food Handler Certification. All of this was handled by the Senior Center in the past, but since we are the primary users of the kitchen in the future, we need to obtain our own training and certification. Since we will not be able to have our pancake breakfast in February, Lion Jack Edwards will be on site to greet the public who did not get the word about the cancelled breakfast.
We had our annual visit by the District Governor, Sarah Enloe, along with members of her cabinet.
Our spring calendar is filling up fast. We are getting ready for our annual Student Speaker Contest, thanks to Lion John Zehnder, Jr., and Lion Jack Edwards. It is scheduled for February 10th at the Pavilion at Elk Grove Regional Park. Please plan on being there to support our speakers. Since we will not be holding the event at our regular meeting place, we will serve pizza and drinks after the contest rather than a pasta dinner.
Our February board meeting will be held at Round Table Pizza on Elk Grove Blvd, and our 4th Monday meeting will be held at the Spaghetti Factory on Laguna Blvd. We should be back at the Beeman Rec Center starting in March.
We lost a long time member, Bill Hibbard, in December and we supported his family with an outstanding Celebration of Life. Thanks to all of the Lions who stepped up for Bill’s family. Some of our members attended the memorial service while the rest of the club prepared the meal for the Celebration of Life.
This was a difficult time for our membership. Bill Heston’s wife, Linda, passed at the end of January. We have also been told that Dave Ogden, our president for 2005-2006 is in hospice and not expected to live through February. If that is not enough, our Lion Joe Tallerico has stepped down from his positions with the board because of health issues. Our hearts and prayers go out to our members and their families during this difficult time.
