Fellow Lions, Friends of the Elk Grove Lions Club and our Community.
Well, I have returned as your president for another term. Thanks again for believing in me and asking me to step up one more time. I am looking forward to a great year, as usual.
This month, as we transition, we will be buys with our regular meetings and our community pancake breakfast.
I am looking forward to the Past President’s BBQ as well as the Boy Scout Award Banquet, the Delta Lions Club pear bread baking, the Strauss Festival and of course, the Kohl’s Child Spree.
Next month we have the camp out n the park, the EG Historical Society Raising the Barn event and the FFA and Staff breakfast at Elk Grove High School.
Thank you to our club members who have contributed by showing up to provide the support for all of our community events and fundraising efforts. I am proud to call myself an Elk Grove Lion.
Sincerely,
Lion Warren Weaver

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of projects including disaster relief — across many borders. We serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.
We hope you will consider joining our club.
To become a Lion, you must be of good moral character and good reputation in our community.

Fellow Lions, Friends of the Elk Grove Lions Club and our Community.
As you know, my term as your president is coming to an end, but I must say that it has been a great experience. I have fully enjoyed leading our club over the past 12 months. Our community outreach has been at times very hectic and time consuming for many of our board. That said, we have fulfilled our mission “to Serve” our community. I feel enourmous pride and gratitude for all that my fellow lions have achieved in the past year. I’d like to send a heartfelt thanks to my board for supporting me and delivering on our mission. Thanks for all you do.
As we look back on the month of May, we started strong with two big events on the 2nd. First of all was the Big Day of Giving. Thanks to Lion Jack, we were able to receive over $4,000 in donations to allow us to continue to serve our community. Also a special Thank You to Lions Sharon and Brian for hosting a booth for the Big Day of Giving at the Elk Grove Food Bank while Lion Jack and were at another function.
That same evening I was happy to join Lion Jack and two students to give each of them a $1,500 scholarship at the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation event, Spotlight on Scholarships. A big congratulations to Vatsana Khammanivong from Florin High School who received the Scholarship in Memory of Paul Betschart & Gary Dapelo and to Joy Stewart from Pleasant Grove High School who received the scholarship in Memory of Ted Schmidt & Henry Kloss. Thanks again to Lion Jack who sits on that subcommittee for our club and who had the task of reviewing almost 300 scholarship applications to come up with these two winners. Check out the photos of our scholarship winners in the Activities and Photos Section Below
Our monthly pancake breakfast went smoothly. We were double booked as we also had our club members at the Elk Grove Historical Society Victorian Era Courtship Tea serving as well as handling the parking/traffic control too. The following week, another group of Lions were at Elk Grove High School along with Lion Warren and Lion Lorene to handle their senior graduation rehearsal breakfast, serving over 400 students and teachers. The following week, we were at Barbara Comstock Elementary School preparing breakfast burritos for their recognition of school volunteers. Again, Lion Lorene was there to keep us on task.
Of course, it would not be May without a dozen Lions showing up at the County Fair for our FFA and 4-H students to prepare breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. As usual, we served hundreds of kids and buyers at that event with the assistance of the Pride of Laguna Creek Lions. We had great crews on both days. As always, I know that I can rely on our great group of Lions to be there when we need them. Thanks to all who participated.
Coming up next month will be the Installation Dinner for our incoming officers.
District convention was at the beginning of the month. Our club received several awards. We won the “Humanitarian Award” for our Rise Against Hunger event that benefitted that organization and our local EG Food Bank. We also won the “Community Service Award” for our work with Uplift Elk Grove. The third award our club garnered was the “Community Leadership Award” which acknowledges both the quantity and quality of our community outreach. Finally, yours truly was awarded the Lion of the Year for the Sacramento district. This honor is a only a reflection of the support I have received from our club.
Thank you to our club members who have contributed by showing up to provide the support for all of our community events and fundraising efforts. I am proud to call myself an Elk Grove Lion.
Sincerely,
Lion Bob Shipley

Spotlight on Scholarship
After reviewing and scoring almost 300 applications, we were able to select and present a scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to each of the following students. It was especially interesting to note that the top 20 students who’s applications I reviewed, also received a scholarship from one of the other supporters since the students apply for multiple scholarships.
The Scholarship in Memory of Paul Betschart & Gary Dapelo was presented to Vatsana Khammanivong from Florin High School

Fellow Lions, Friends of the Elk Grove Lions Club and our Community.
We had a great April. To start off the month, we had our inaugral Burgers and Brews fundraiser. It was a great event. We learned a lot and will probably have to double the lines for both the tater tot bar and the burger line. It went a little slower getting everyone fed than we want.
Our monthly pancake breakfast went well too. The CSD Volunteer BBQ worked out well. Not as many volunteers showed up as expected, but we had a great plan and a great crew to carry it out.
Our big effort for the month was assisting Post 55, American Legion, with their inaugral fundraising dinner. We prepared food and served about 240 people. It was a great success for the Post and a great time was had by all. I know that they really appreciated our support as well as the support of the Pride of Laguna Creek Lions who handled the bar.
To finish off the month, Lion Jack and his crew prepared dinner for Uplift People of Elk Grove on the 30th. It was of little cost to the club because our friends at Post 55 donated the remainder of their sliced tritip and rolls for that dinner. Our only costs were for the salad and dessert. As usual, the folks at Uplift People of Elk Grove were very appreciative.
Finally, Lion Jack has been posting info on our Facebook Page and our Instagram Page for the annual Big Day of Giving which is set for the first Thursday in May. Lion Jack said that he has set a goal of receiving over $4,000 in donations to the club.
Also coming up next month will be our assistance to the Elk Grove Historical Society for their annual spring tea. We are also gearing up for assisting Irene B West with their fundraiser, the EGHS Senior Graduation breakfast, the Barbara Comstock Morse tea and of course, supporting the FFA and 4-H students at the county fair at the end of May.
Remember that we won’t have a dinner meeting on the 27th because the facility will be closed for Memorial Day.
