Lion President Jack Edwards

Well, we have made it through our first month with me as your President. So far, so good. We had a very busy July. Our first meeting of the month was the Past President’s BBQ thanks to Immediate Past President Bob Brewer. Our board meeting was handled by 2nd VP Sharon at The Barn Cafe in Sheldon. Our final dinner meeting of the month was also held at The Barn Cafe in Sheldon. Thanks to all of you for the great turnout.

As is often the case, we again doubled up our community events and served pancakes at the Senior Center Breakfast on the 9th, followed by cooking hamburgers and hotdogs for the CSD Community Campout at Elk Grove Park. The following morning, the crew returned to the park to prepare sausages and pancakes for the approximately 340 campers. It was a great event. Thanks to Lions Bob Brewer, Dave King, Dan Pearson, Bill Hibbard, Vanita Kumari, Harjeet Kumar, Pancho Sanchez, Jim Switzgable and Lorene Fuhs.

Later in the month, we assisted the Strauss Festival by handling the collections for parking. Thanks to the chair of the event, Lion Dave King, we had great crews on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. If that wasn’t enough to keep us buys over the weekend, Lion Jim Switzgable’s crew was up early on Saturday morning to cook pancakes at the Kohl’s Child Spree in support of our friends at the Optimist Club of Elk Grove.  Thanks to all of the Lions who volunteered. We could not be the force within our community without you.

We also have the following plans for August. We will start off on the 3rd with our Chili’s fundraiser. We passed out hundreds of flyers during the Strauss Festival and hope for a great turnout. On the 6th Lion Bob Brewer and crew will handle the Historical Society BBQ. We have our regular meetings and the board meeting. Our first meeting, on the 8th will be at the Senior Center. We will be doing the Senior Center Breakfast on Saturday the 13th. The board meeting on the 15th and the 4th Monday meeting on the 22nd will be at The Barn Cafe in Sheldon. I hope to see all of you at our upcoming activities.

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of projects including disaster relief — across many borders. We serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.

    • We hope you will consider joining our club.
    • To become a Lion, you must be of good moral character and good reputation in our community.
    • Membership is by invitation.
    • If you’re interested in being invited to join Lions Club of Elk Grove, you may want to consider some of the following facts about Lionism:
      • Lions are active.
      • Our motto is “We Serve.”

Lion President Jack Edwards

Hello, and welcome to my first newsletter as your club president. I am looking forward to a fun filled, but busy year.  As we have over the past several years, we, the whole club, will continue to fulfill our motto, “We Serve” in our community. I want to thank you in advance for your support because I know that you will step up and help our club excel in the coming year.

We finished on a busy June and are already off to a busy July. Of course, we worked the senior center breakfast on the same morning that we worked the Spotlight BBQ at Mosher Ranch where we handle the parking and the cooking. It always makes me proud to be a Lion when we get recognized for our service to the other service clubs and non profit organizations in our community.  Also, Lion Dave Ogden and crew handled our installation dinner on June 27th at the Senior Center. Immediate past president, Bob Brewer, announced two major awards at the dinner. He selected Lion Brad Dano as the Lion of the Year, and Lion Dan Pearson as the newest Melvin Jones Fellow. Congratulations to two very worthy Lions.

The last event of the month will be parking control at the Elk Grove Run  4 Hunger at Elk Grove Park in support of the Elk Grove Food Bank on the 25th of June. Thanks to our crew for their hard work. It was very much appreciated.

To start off the new year, we again doubled up events and served pancakes at the Senior Center Breakfast on the 9th, followed by cooking hamburgers and hotdogs for the CSD Community Campout at Elk Grove Park.

Later this month, we will be working parking control for the Strauss Festival and will be cooking pancakes at the Kohl’s Child Spree in support of our friends at the Optimist Club of Elk Grove.  We might even have a couple Lions helping at the Elk Fest on the 23rd as well.

You may have heard that the Board voted in some changes in our meeting schedule. Here is your update: For the month of July, August and September we have been invited by Lion Tom to have our board meetings at 6:30 at “The Barn” in Sheldon, if he is open by the 18th. We also plan to have our 4th Monday meeting and dinner at 7:00 at The Barn for those three months. We will be sending out an email to give you an update on the status of those meeting changes.
Another question that has come up, especially since it is often a challenge to schedule cooks for our dinner meetings, is “Do we want to continue to be a club that prepares our own dinner for our dinner meetings or do we want to meet at a restaurant for our dinner meetings?” Something we will be discussing at an upcoming meeting.
Let’s reach out to our fellow members:

Please keep Lion Heinz in your prayers. He started radiation treatment in December. Give him a call and lend him your support. He can be reached at (540) 888-3936.

President’s Message UpArrowPurple

Lion President Bob Brewer

Well, this is my last newsletter as your club president. It has been a great year. We did exactly what we were supposed to do, “We Served” our community. I want to thank the membership as well as my board. Without the support of all of you , we would not have had the success we did.

For a change, we had a slightly less busy month of May.  Of course, we had our usual breakfast at the Senior Center, we worked the Scholarship Awards Banquet on the 5th and I had the honor of presenting, for the Elk Grove Lions Club,  two scholarships to a couple of great high school seniors. We also worked the Sheldon High School Senior Breakfast and the Adriani Elementary School Pancake Breakfast on the 23rd.

As we move into the month of June, my last month as your President, we will need your help at several events. To start the month off, we will be doing the senior center breakfast on the same morning that we will be setting up to work the Spotlight BBQ at Mosher Ranch where we handle the parking and the cooking so it will be a full day of work to support the Scholarship Foundation. If you are available on the 11th of June, please check with Lion Jim to assist at the breakfast, or Lion Joe Tallerico to assist at the BBQ.

Last of all, I hope all of you will be at our installation dinner on June 27th at the Senior Center. Lion Dave Ogden will be handling the job as head cook and PDG Erv Gon will be our master of ceremonies. Let’s all be there to help incoming president Lion Jack Edwards get a great start.

The last event of the month will be parking control at the Elk Grove Run  4 Hunger at Elk Grove Park in support of the Elk Grove Food Bank on the 25th of June.

Application for Membership
