President’s Message UpArrowPurple

Fellow Lions, Friends of the Elk Grove Lions Club and our Community.

Another very busy month has come and gone. As usual we had our regular Monday night dinner meetings and our monthly board meeting. We also had a great time on the 2nd Saturday of the month hosting our Community Pancake Breakfast with over 100 guests.

We worked the cooking event for CSD at the Great Pumpkin Festival where we cooked for the employees and volunteers for CSD. Lion Lorene did a great job coordinating the event and Lion Jack made some great salsa. It was so good, that for the Monday dinner, Lion Jack prepared a fantastic Nacho Grande dinner bar featuring very tasty beef, nacho cheese and his salsa. It was so good, that he has been asked to do it again for the Carnitas Festival on the 28th of October.  Yay Jack!

One of our very special events on our schedule for the month of October was the “Fight Hunger, Locally and Globally.”  We have invited members of every service club in Elk Grove along with employees of the City of Elk Grove and CSD. We hoped for 50-60 volunteers but ended up with 71. We filled over 10,236 meal packets and collected over 70 cases of canned goods for the Elk Grove Food Bank.

We also served a good crowd at the Elk Grove High Pasta Dinner, thanks to Lion Warren and his crew. Before the end of the month, we were set to host 250 people at the Bradshaw Christian High School’s First Fall Festival, in support of their FFA program. Soon the numbers jumped to 450, then on the day of the event it was over 800 tickets sold. We provided enough hamburgers and dogs for 500 people and the event planners at the school scrambled to get enough food to feed 800 people. But as luck would have it, they sold another 200 tickets at the door and had to make a shopping run for more food. It was a long event for our cooking crew, but Lion Jack was lucky to have a great crew of Lions plus one potential new member, Ed Mooney who put in the effort to make it look like it was on cruise control. We did not let them see us sweat, except for the crew standing in front of the BBQs.

Finally, the last event of the month was our annual Day of the Dead Carnitas Festival on the 28th. Lion Jack came through with 2 gallons of salsa fresca to go with the great carnitas. Thanks to Lion TJ Weaver and his crew for putting this event together. It is really great to see our new members stepping up to make our club even better.

I’m proud of our club and all that we do for our community.  Our schedule is the busiest it has been in years, and that means we are meeting our mission to serve.
Sincerely,
Lion Bob Shipley

I know that you have seen this note before, but our friends in the other service clubs who assisted us at our “Stop Hunger, Locally and Globally,” have been saying that they are very happy about the article in Be Local that highlights our local service clubs and their major fundraising events. So, if you have not done it yet, take a look at this article about our Service Clubs written by our own public affairs officer, Lion Jack Edwards, published by BeLocal in June? In July, his companion article about several of our local non-profit organizations was published. Thanks Jack for getting the word out about the Lions and the other great organizations in our community. You can read it here. Below the picture of the monthly magazine you will find the article about the non-profits and the interview with Jack & Tracey.

Application for Membership

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of projects including disaster relief — across many borders. We serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.

    • We hope you will consider joining our club.
    • To become a Lion, you must be of good moral character and good reputation in our community.
    • Membership is by invitation.
    • If you’re interested in being invited to join Lions Club of Elk Grove, you may want to consider some of the following facts about Lionism:
      • Lions are active.
      • Our motto is “We Serve.”
